This is one in a series of posts that describe what I use and how I use it for genealogy. These are all personal observations and recommendations based on my experiences over the years. It is my hope that these will help others become better researchers and give them the tools to do this efficiently and easily and to enjoy the process!
For those who love to compartmentalize, a blog reader or newsfeed is a must. Most blogs give you the option to receive them via email, but I have found it easier to have a dedicated program or app to handle them. Personally, I felt like I could never keep on top of my incoming emails when I had blog posts delivered there. A blog reader doesn’t care if you have a few busy days and ignore it until you get time.
My blog reader of choice is Feedly. I have it on my desktop, laptop, tablet, and smart phone, but find that I use the app on my phone most of the time since it is convenient for those times when I have a few minutes here or there.
Some of my favorite features include being able to save things for later, being able to share blogs with others through email, and that it can sort in a variety of ways. Adding content is easy and, conversely, so is removing it if I find it not to be interesting to me.
You can opt to login to the free version using your Google or Facebook profile, which makes staying logged in and having fast access to your content easy. Feedly can also be used for a variety of things other than blogs, such as publications, YouTube video channels, and notifications or alerts.
While Feedly offers a paid subscription that has some great features, such as integrating with Evernote, at this point I use the free version. Around Christmas 2015, they ran a special for about $50 for a year subscription.
Other features that come with a paid subscription include the ability to search within your feeds, faster sync, and premium support.
