Victor Wilfred "Bounce" Sundin (1913-1987)
Victor Wilfred Sundin, or "Bounce" as he was called by family, was born 26 Jun 1913 in Victoria, Ontonagon County, Michigan. Some records have his name as Wilfred Victor Sundin.
He married Georgia Lee Coldiron, born 25 Mar 1916 to parents Ambrose and Aulsie Coldiron, 29 Aug 1932 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Things didn't work out for the couple, and she married Thomas McCutcheon 3 May 1948 in Raleigh County. Her last name was recorded as Stump on the Marriage Record to Thomas, so it looks as though she may have remarried prior to marrying him. Georgia Lee died 14 Dec 2003 in Wilmington, New Hanover County, North Carolina, and is buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery there.
Victor Wilfred then married Susan Alice Walker, born 5 Feb 1917 to parents Bert Woodrow and Virgie Odessa (Duff) Walker. They had 3 children: Phyllis Jean (Sundin) Manley, Wilfred Lee Sundin, and Donald Edward Sundin. The marriage didn't last, although it does not appear that Susan Alice remarried. She died 16 Apr 1992 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, and is buried in Grandview Memorial Cemetery in Dunbar, with her parents.
In Dec 1963, Victor Wilfred married Mrs. Ramona Lois (Stewart) Walker in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Ramona was born 26 Oct 1931 in Ripley, Jackson County, West Virginia, and died 1 Jul 1983 in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Victor Wilfred died 31 Dec 1987 in Miami at the age of 74 years.

Hello Folks,
Got your letter the other day. Sure was glad to hear from you.
I guess Mike is glad now that he didn't join (sorta). Is he working for Mr. Dickson?
Well what do you think about Bounce getting married? Guess he though[t] he would get out of the army (luck). Got a letter from Uncle Andrew and they said that Ann left Uncle Eric[k] because he was drinking so much.
Is the mines working good? Say I heard that you bought a lot. Where was it? It wouldn't be in Belle by any chance.
I was going home for Christmas, but I guess I won't. They moved Earl up to N.Y. He was going home to[o].
Say you better watch out what kind of jokes you write. They are censoring our letters (ha ha).
Oh yes that picture you sent me of Pat was good.
Tell Mike to write if he feels like it. Is he going to join after he gets glasses[?] I'm going to need them soon if they don't stop giving us blinker[guessing at this word] so much.
Wish I could have been there when you had that crowd.
It's been raining here for a couple of days but cleared up today.
Well well well Christmas is coming and it will be just another day for me. Hope the kids have a big one.
Well Aggie you'll have to excuse me this time, maybe I'll write more next time.
Did I tell you I won a watch [a] couple of nights ago[?]
Will write soon.
Donald

Donald
While home on leave, Donald married Dorothy May Hickman 25 Sep 1942 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. She was born 10 May 1921 in Charleston, daughter of Floyd Donald and Elizabeth B. (Frazier) Hickman.
In 1943, Donald was a member of the armed guard crew serving aboard a merchant vessel that was torpedoed and sunk in the mid-Atlantic. Donald was declared deceased 6 Feb 1944, a year and a day after being officially placed in the status of missing in action.
From Bob Sundin, Donald's younger brother: |
While the information provided later would indicate Donald was on the SS West Portal and not part of the Dorchester's convoy, the story of "The Four Chaplains" gives a detailed and inspiring depiction of what was happening at that time.
|
Following Donald's death, Dorothy May married Harry Francis Johnston 9 Nov 1946 in Kanawha County, West Virgina. She died 25 Feb 1995 at the age of 73 years. Harry, born 15 Feb 1912 in Rosina in Kanawha County, preceded her in death 29 Jul 1966 in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia. He is buried in Cunningham Memorial Park in Saint Albans.
