25. Mahala Jane Henderson (1886-1964) Age 78
24. John Ambors Bocook (1889-1947) Age 57
Michael Francis Dugan (1880-1966) Age 85
Mahala Jane Henderson was born 15 Mar 1886 in Carter County, Kentucky, the daughter of Uriah David and Mary E. (Eulett) Henderson. Mahala used the nickname "Hallie" most of her life, although a variety of spellings can be found in the records, including "Haley" and "Hala."
Hallie was born into what would now be called a blended family. Her father, Uriah David "Dave" Henderson, was one of 14 known children of Robert Jasper and Amy J. (Gilbert) Henderson. He had first married Emeline "Emily" Hanshoe in 1876 and had two sons, Henry "Epp" Henderson (1880-1941) and Edward Barney "Ed" Henderson (1883-1955). In 1884, he married Mary E. (Eulett) Stone, widow of Charles H. Stone. She had two children from her first marriage, Louisa Ellan Stone (1878-1932) and Charles William Cudburt "Cuddie" Stone (1881-1958). Dave and Mary had three children together, Myrtie (Henderson) McGlone (1885-1968), Mahala (our subject), and an unnamed child that died in infancy. |
1900 U.S. Federal Census
Mahala's parents seem to have died before 1900, as there is no trace of them in that census or any subsequent records. Attempts to locate any concrete information about either of their deaths or burials has been met with frustration, which is not surprising given the time period and geographic location. Often few records of this sort exist unless a family Bible, grave marker, or funeral record can be found.
Hallie is found in the 1900 Census living in Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, in the household of her Aunt Susan Henderson, youngest sister of her father. They are enumerated 8 Jun 1900 as if it were 1 Jun 1900 in Dwelling Number 112, Household Number 119, starting on Line 58 as follows:
-Susan Henderson, head of household, white, female, born Nov 1867, age 32 years, single, has had 1 child and 1 is living, born in Kentucky, father born in Kentucky, mother born in Virginia, Farmer, 0 months not employed, can read, can write, and can speak English, owns her home free of a mortgage, it is a farm and is Number 32 on the Farm Schedule
-George D. Henderson [Stamper], son of the head of household, white, male, born Jul 1898, age 1 year, single, he and both parents were born in Kentucky
-Haley J., neace [sic] of the head of household, white, female, born Mar 1888, age 12 years, single, she and both parents were born in Kentucky, at school, attended school 5 months, can read, can write, and can speak English
-Amy J. [(Gilbert)] Henderson, mother of the head of household, white, female, born Mar 1824, age 76 years, widowed, although a 14 is in the column for number of years married, it appears to be there in error, as there is also a 14 in the column for number of children and 7 are living, born in Virginia, father born in Illinoise [sic - both spelling and place are in error], and mother born in Virginia, Pensioner, out of work for 10 months, can read, cannot write, and can speak English
In the same dwelling, but enumerated as the next household is another sister of Susan and Uriah's, Rebecca, along with her daughter Ethel.

1910 U.S. Federal Census
In the 1910 Census for Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, Hallie is enumerated 29 Apr 1910 as if it were 15 Apr 1910 working as a servant in the home of Morton Willard Clark, her second cousin, three households away from John Bocook's family. John Bocook, age 21 years, is shown as the stepson of Samuel V. Bocook, who indicates that wife Amanda [Bryant] is his second marriage and that they have been married 17 years. Amanda indicates this is her first marriage and that she has had 6 children and 5 are living.

Although the birth of Hallies' son John Dugan is thought to be 11 Feb 1910, he is not found with her in the 1910 Census. He could have been with someone else at the time Hallie was enumerated or his birth may have been in 1911.
While the close proximity of the residences of John Bocook and Mahala Henderson in 1910 is not conclusive evidence that John Bocook is his father, John Bert Dugan told family members that his father was, in fact, John Bocook. A photo of John Bocook was provided by Aggie Dugan along with confirmation that John B. Dugan had known John Bocook and that he was his father and that he had visited him in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio.

Autosomal and Y-DNA Testing
DNA testing on two sons of John Dugan show absolutely no connection to anyone with a Bocook surname. The difficulty in determining his paternal line is compounded by the fact that we have no proof that John Ambors Bocook is the father of John Dugan and if he is the father, we still have no idea who his father was.
Y-DNA shows matches with the suname Pruitt (3), Morton (5), and Chisholm (19). Although there are more Chisholm matches, they are from further back in time. Research is ongoing to find the connection(s) to Pruitt and Morton, and both subjects tested from our family have been added to the Pruitt DNA Project on Family Tree DNA.
Autosomal matches show numerous connections to the Henderson, Eulett, Gilbert, Perry, Miller, and Tabor families, as well as the Bryant, Blevins, and Tackett families.

Clive Bryant
As I began delving into the family history many decades ago, other researchers were kind enough to share what they had found with me. Being a novice, I took them at their word, and did not always get sources or ensure that I had copied complete information from them. At that time, I didn't even know what questions to ask, let alone why I was asking them.
It was reported that Hallie had married a man named Clive Bryant. I have found no record of any such marriage, nor found anybody in the area by the name of Clive Bryant. John Ambors Bocook did have a first cousin, Cleveland Harmey Bryant, born in 1886 in Olive Hill. So here is a man who is the right age, and in the right place, and although I have not found the exact date of his marriage to Sydney Marie Tabor, their first child was born in 1915, implying a marriage around 1913. From a timing perspective, he and Hallie could have had a short-lived marriage.
So it is possible, although not probable, that there was a marriage or some other sort of relationship with "Clive" Bryant.

Thomas Mason Stapleton
Thomas Mason Stapleton was born 7 Jan 1881 in Elliott County, Kentucky, the son of James Harvey and Nancy J. (Johnson) Stapleton. Thomas was married(?) six times that I have found. I will use the term married, although it may be better described as partnered in the cases where no marriage record has been located.
Around 1902-1903, he married Grace King, granddaughter of Samuel Houston and Elizabeth C. (Mobley) King. They had a son, William Stapleton, born 4 Dec 1904, and it appears that Grace died sometime between his birth and early 1908. William can be found in the 1910 Census at age 6 years living with his Uncle William Eugene King and family in Olive Hill, Carter County, Kentucky, and in the 1920 Census at age 16 years living with his father and then current family in the Cabin Creek District of Kanawha County, West Virginia. In 1922, William married Gertrude Brizendine, daughter of Wade Hampton and Carrie (Garrett) Brizendine, and they had at least four children, although two died as infants. Sometimes between 1925 and 1929, the family relocated to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. William died 29 May 1978 in North College Hill and is buried in Arlington Memorial Gardens in Mount Healthy. His son, Ernest W. Stapleton (1925-1996) is also buried there.
Thomas Mason Stapleton then married Susie Tackett 2 Jan 1908, although I cannot locate this particular record at this time. There are marriage records for a Susan "Susie" Tackett, daughter of Moses and Katie (Lawson) Tacket, marrying Harrison Wilburn 12 Aug 1910 in Carter County, Kentucky, and James R. Casteel / Castelle 24 Aug 1910 in Carter County, Kentucky. Harrison would later marry Alice Crank, below.
Alice Crank, daughter of Robert Milton and Paulina F. (Davis) Crank, married Thomas Mason Stapleton 28 Mar 1910 in Carter County, Kentucky. She married Harrison Wilburn 8 Apr 1911 in Carter County, Kentucky.
The same day that Alice and Harrison were married, Thomas Mason Stapleton married Alice Whitt, daughter of James Wesley and Emma Whitt. Thomas and Alice had a daughter in 1912, but she passed away in early 1913 at the age of 1 year. That marriage ended quickly, too. Alice is named as the mother of Frank Wilburn, born 1 Jul 1915, and Bertha Marie Wilburn, born 24 Jan 1919, in Carter County, Kentucky. She is living with them in the household of her employer, Allen Abrams, during the 1920 Census, in Russell, Greenup County, Kentucky. She seems to have eventually married Allen, as they had a son together, Walter Homer Abrams (1921-1929) and she was using his last name at the time of the 1930 Census.
Thomas Mason Stapleton married Mahala Jane Henderson 3 Jul 1912 in Carter County, Kentucky. Given the track record of his previous marriages, this one did a little better. His son William came to live with them and Hallie's son John took his last name. The family moved to Acme, Kanawha County, West Virginia, and Thomas got work as a Miner at the Cabin Creek Consolidated Coal Company. On his World War I Draft Registration Card, he lists "Haley" as his wife, gives his date of birth as 7 Jan 1881, and describes himself as medium height, medium build, with blue eyes, and black hair.

A little further down the page, Roland McGlone, his wife Myrtie (Henderson) McGlone, and their kids are enumerated. Myrtie is Hallie's sister.
At the top of the page starting on Line 52, is William [Martin] Stapleton and his family. William is the younger brother of Thomas Mason Stapleton.

But the marriage between Thomas Mason Stapleton and Hallie did not last much longer than that. He married Emma Anna (Garthee) Casteel, widow of Joseph C. Casteel, about 1920. They had two known children together, Kathleen (Stapleton) Greene (1921-1994) and Edna Mae (Stapleton) Hetrick (1924-1974). Emma died in 1926 at the age of 39 years and was buried in Dixon Cemetery in Westwood, Boyd County, Kentucky. Thomas Mason Stapleton died 16 Sep 1958 in the Daniel Drake Memorial Hospital in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He was buried 19 Sep 1958 in Flag Spring Cemetery in Newtown, Hamilton County, Ohio.
Michael Francis Dugan
Hallie finally found the love of her life in Mike Dugan. Mike was born 26 Sep 1880 in Malden, Kanawha County, West Virginia, the son of John Patrick "Jack" and Kathryn "Katie" (Heatherman) Dugan. His mother died sometime after giving birth to his younger brother, Patrick H. Dugan, in 1886, and prior to 22 Aug 1889 when Jack married Lusetta (Bays) Smith, widow of Henry Smith. This was about the time when Mike started working in the mines alongside his dad. An article in the Beckley Post-Herald published 13 Nov 1946 gives more details about this. |

Mullens Man Has Good Record As Miner, Sailor
_____
MULLENS, Nov. 12 — Blessed with the luck of the Irish, of which he is typical in more ways than his County Mayo brogue and Irish wit, Michael F. "Mike" Dugan Sr., of Mullens, may well afford to boast of the records he has established in the course of his life's work.
Well kept and apparently in good health for his 66 years of age, a mark he reached last September 26, Mike began a career of mining at the early age of nine years after convincing a foreman at the Winifred, Kanawha County, mine that he was up-to-doing a man-sized job.
In the 57 years that have followed, Mike has spent over 52 years mining the earth's inwards besides finding time to serve two hitches, a period of five years, with the Merchant Marine, a last hitch during World War II, after joining up a second time at the ripe age of 63 to sail with merchant ships through Nazi U-boat infested waters.
Small for his age, Mike's first assignment at the Kanawha County mine was a job of trapping. Not content with this relatively easy chore, Mike yearned for the day when he could join his father in the face of the mine loading coal.
A year later at the age of 10, Mike claimed a "half turn" beside his father who was recognized as one of the best loaders at the mine. By a "half turn," Mike explained, he was allowed to load one-half the number of cars that were allotted he and his father daily.
Mining in the 1890's was done the hard way when the coal pick was the more used tool inside the mine.
Picking out his daily earnings by the bushel basket full, a method of weighing or measuring coal in the days before scales made their appearance at the mines, Mike followed mining until the start of World War I when the urge to get into battle and see the world accounted for his joining the merchant marine.
After making port along the seven seas, Mike returned to the mines in 1919, a married man and settled down to mine more earnestly.
All of his time has not been spent mining coal, one soon learns as Mike tells of his experiences in the copper and silver mines of New Mexico, and of life inside the iron mines of Montana and New York. Long ago he lost count of the number of mines in which he had worked.
Came World War II and the urgent need for merchant seamen, Mike decided he wanted to sail again and did so for nearly two years earning the distinction of being one of the oldest men to serve in this branch of service during the emergency.
Still held on the inactive list of merchant seamen, Mike again returned to mining last year, since employed laying track at the Perry Coal Company, Mullens.
While men have suffered and died in near reach, Mike with his luck, has suffered no more than a mashed finger to blemish his mining and seaman careers.
For his services rendered with the merchant marine during World War II, he has been awarded the following citations: North Atlantic War Zone bar; Mediterranean-Middle East bar; Direct enemy action combat ribbon.

1940 U.S. Federal Census
