Spring Grove Cemetery
Of all the cemeteries I frequent, Spring Grove is one of my favorites. It is absolutely beautiful and always a joy to visit, but also extremely large and difficult to navigate without Section and Lot maps. Second in the nation only to Arlington National Cemetery, it has over 700 acres, of which 450 are developed and in use. There are roughly a quarter of a million burials there. Many of the Lots are family Lots and have a central monument surounded by individual markers for each person.
They have an incredible website at www.springgrove.org with a Locate a Loved One page. You can search by name or location to access the burial records. These contain a wealth of information and are definitely worth a look. Expanding your search to include everybody in the same Lot is a great way to find other family members. I am fortunate to live in an area where many of my ancestors were early inhabitants. While most had large families and married into other local families, some, like my GGGrandfather William Henry Chapple, fell victim to consumption at an early age. It brought me great sadness to locate the Lot in which he is buried (Sec. 101, Lot 99) and find that his is the only marker of the 10 family members buried there. Oddly enough, Spring Grove can best be described as full of life. It is filled with people walking, families biking, historians exploring, wedding parties taking photos, and a myriad of other activities at any given time. And yet, it maintains its peace and dignity honoring those who rest there. There is no shortage of wildlife, and while you can still hear the sounds of the busy world outside these gates, it is distant and unobtrusive. |
