One account of the accident was that they had been returning home from a Fourth of July picnic and upon approaching a one-lane bridge, had pulled off the road to let a car exit the bridge so they could cross. Misjudging the distance, the car hit the abutment, overturning and dumping its occupants into the Little Cranberry River.
