John Sundin / Röjås Jonas Olsson (1892-1951)

John Sundin
Röjås Jonas Olsson was born 23 Jun 1892 in Boda, Kopparberg (Dalarna), Sverige (Sweden), to parents Olof Hansson and Kerstin Hansdotter.  He was the fifth son born to them.

He married Emma Regina Rehn, born 1 May 1895 in Ore, Koppaberg (Dalarna), Sverige (Sweden), to parents Hans Rehn and Anna Ersdotter, 9 Jul 1916 while still living in Sweden.  Their first daughter, Ellen Valborg Sundin, was born 25 Feb 1917 in Boda.  A son, Harry Evert Olsson, was born 30 Apr 1922 in Boda, but only lived 4 months, passing away 15 Sep 1922.

Jonas or John as he would later be called, Emma, and Ellen immigrated to the United States in 1923, traveling from Gothenburg to the Port of New York aboard the Drottningholm.

Upon arriving in the United States, Röjås Jonas Olsson changed his name to John Sundin.  Emma, who had gone by Emma Olsson, was now using Emma Sundin.  John and Emma filed their Declarations of Intention 10 Jun 1925.  They both filed Preliminary Forms for Petitions of Naturalization 18 Aug 1928 in which they reflected their current and former names.  In Mar 1929, John and Emma filed their Petitions for Naturalization.  John and Emma took their Oaths of Allegiance and became United States Citizens 8 Jul 1929.

John and Emma had another son, Francis James Sundin, born in 1929 in Glen Rogers, Wyoming County, West Virgina.  Francis was a graduate of the Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg.  He died 15 Jun 1963 after an unsuccessful recovery following a major operation in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio, and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia.
Daughter Ellen Valborg Sundin married Hayden Kimmel Wolfe, son of Walter and Beulah (Kimmel) Wolfe, 29 Apr 1936 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  Hayden died 2 May 1992 in Beckley and is buried in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Prosperity, Raleigh County, West Virgina.  Ellen died 26 Oct 2003 in New Richmond, Wyoming County, West Virginia, and is buried in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens beside Hayden.

John died from a heart attack 9 May 1951 in Glen Rogers and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia.  He was 58 years old.

John Sundin, 58, Dies At Residence
GLEN ROGERS, May 9 - John Sundin, 58-year-old Glen Rogers resident, died unexpectedly at 3:20 p.m. today of a heart attack immediately upon his arrival at home from the Raleigh-Wyoming Mining Company's Glen Rogers mine where he was employed.
 
Born in Sweden June 26, 1892, he had been a machinist at Glen Rogers for more than 20 years, and was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Glen Rogers local union of the United Mine Workers of America.
 
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Sundin, of Glen Rogers; one daughter, Mrs. Hayden Wolfe, of Glen Rogers; one son, Francis Sundin, with the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox, Ky.; and three brothers, Ole Sundin, of Belle, Daniel Sundin, of Sweden, and Eric Sundin, of Iron Mountain, Mich.
 
The body will remain at the Williams Funeral Home, Sophia, pending the arrival of his son from Ft. Knox.

Emma died 27 Sep 1988 at the age of 93 years in Beckley Hospital, Beckley, Raleigh County, West Virginia, and is buried in Sunset Memorial Park beside John.

Emma R. Sundin
Mrs. Emma Regina Rehn Sundin of Glen Roger, Wyoming County, formerly of Sweden, died Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1988, in Beckley Hospital after a long illness.

She was a naturalized citizen.  She was a member of Glen Roger Community Methodist Church, the Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge.

Surviving:  daughter, Ellen Wolfe of Glen Rogers; brother, Eric Rehn of Dayton, Ohio; sister, Hulda Anderson of Sweden; five granchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Melton Mortuary, with the Rev. Homer Sykes officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.
