Röjås Olof Hansson was born 15 Jun 1854 in Anderåsen, Dalarna, Sweden, the son of Hans Andersson and Kerstin Andersdotter.  He was baptised the 18 Jun 1854 in Boda Parish, Kopparberg (Dalarna), Sverige (Sweden).  Naming customs at the time were to add a denomination before the first name.  This extra name was inherited by the children and was attached to the homestead or farm.  Röjås was the name of their family farm.

Olof married Kerstin Hansdotter, the daughter of Sammils Hans Olsson and Brita Hansdotter, 21 Dec 1879 in Sweden.  Their union was blessed with six sons and a daughter, all born on the family farm, Röjås, in Boda, Anderåsen, Dalarna, Sweden.  At the time, that area was considered to be part of Kopparberg.

Their first son, Andrew, was born 5 Jun 1881.  Andrew's proper name is Röjås Anders Olsson.

Their second son, Hans, was born 10 Sep 1883.

Son Olof Olsson was born 19 Apr 1886.  He would later change his name to Ole Sundin.

Another son, Erick, was born 31 Aug 1889.  He would go by Erick Sundin.

Son Jonas was born 23 Jun 1892.  His formal name was Röjås Jonas Olsson, but he later changed it to John Sundin.

The youngest son, Daniel Olsson Röjås, was born 5 May 1895.

Family stories were that the boys had a sister, but her name and exact date of birth are unknown.

Kerstin died 27 Jun 1925 in Boda and is buried in the Boda Kyrkogård (Churchyard).  Olof died 30 Jul 1942 in Anderåsen.  It is unknown where he is buried.

Husförhör (Household Examination Rolls)

In Sweden, the church kept records about everyone in the parish, listed by household.  These records came about from examinations held each year to determine a person's knowledge of the catechism.

While these records are not an official census, they cover much of the same information, such as names, birth dates, birth parishes, marriage dates, occupations, farm names, etc.  They often contain notes about changes within that household that occurred during the period covered, such as if someone moved, died, or got married.

Photos from Charles Sundin

Charles Sundin has very generously shared a great number of his family photos and I am thrilled to share a few of these here.  Charles is the grandson of Andrew and Anna Lena (Skantz) Sundin and a second cousin to my dad and his brothers.  Please see the attached document for more information about the photos / postcards, the inscriptions on the backs, the people pictured in them, and an attempt at the transcription and translation.

Many thanks to Charles for providing these photos and to Liselotte Laurila for the help with translation!

Patronymic Naming Practices of Sweden
Family and Farm Names in Dalarna

There is a website with great information about the sometimes confusing names in Sweden:

http://www.jegelius.se/

At the bottom of the page is a flag icon on the right hand side of:
"To reach the English pages, please click [flag]"

Clicking the flag will allow you to toggle the page between Swedish and English.  Under the 2003-11-03 heading, there is a link for "Swedish Farm- and Soldier names?".  Following that link will take you to an article that does a great job of explaining the naming traditions and patterns in Sweden and, in particular, the area of Boda.
