Speakers For Graduation Set

Ruth Evans Named Class Valedictorian For Norwood High School Exercises on June 10; Jim Yerina Salutatorian

Three North Norwood residents have been selected as the student speakers for the Norwood high school commencement, which will be held on the high school athletic field the night of June 10.

Topping the speakers is Ruth Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil T. Evans, 2608 Sheridan dr, class valedictorian.  The others are Jim Yerina, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Yerina, 2160 Drex av., salutatorian, and Bob Koch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Koch, 2117 Varelman av., class president.

Talk On Socialism
Specific topics for their speeches have not yet been selected, but high school officials report that they will center around the growing emphasis on socialism.

All three of the speakers are active in many school and community activities.  Miss Evans is president of the Senior Y-Teens and Alpha glee club and is co-editor of the Mirror, high school weekly paper.  She also writes a column on high school affairs for the Norwood News.  She belongs to numerous organizations including the National Honor Society, Scholarship squad, HYGR cabinet, the choir and the Cincinnati Editors club.  A recipient of the scholarship to the University of Cincinnati awarded by President Raymond Walters, she intends to major in business administration.

Both Belong
Both of the boys also belong to the National Honor society and are athletes.  Young Yerina is editor of The Silhouette, high school yearbook, and president of the choir.  His memberships include Hi-Y, Omicron glee club, Scholarship squad and "N" club.  Leading hitter on the 1949 Indian baseball team, Jim plans to major in chemical engineering at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh.

Koch, a three-sports letterman, in football, basketball and track, is treasurer of the Honor Society and a member of Hi-Y and "N" club.  He is expected to receive and athletic scholarship and probably will major in physical education, although his present plans are indefinite.

WHAT'S IN [A] NAME
Persons named Evans seem to have a stranglehold at Norwood high school.

The selection of Ruth Evans as valedictorian of the June graduation class gives the Evans' clan domination of that honor for the year.  In January the class valedictorian was J. C. Evans, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Evans, 4022 Catherine av.  Although they bear the same family name the two 1949 valedictorians are not related.
