48.  Thomas R. Pruitt (1844-____)
Lydia Ellen Huff (1844-1919) Age 75

Thomas R. Pruitt is enumerated in the 1875 Kansas Territory Census in Windsor Township, Cowley County, Kansas, living in the area served by the Lazette Post Office.  He and his family are shown on Page 1 (image 1 of 9 at Ancestry.com) beginning on Line 31 in Dwelling Number 8 as Family Number 8.  This census was taken as if it were 1 Mar 1875.

-T. R. Pruett, age 31, male, white, Farmer, born in West Virginia, from Kentucky
-Lydia Pruett, age 25, female, white, born in West Virginia, from Kentucky
-W. H. Pruett, age 2, male, white, born in Kansas
-M[ary] E. Pruitt, age 9/12, female, white, born in Kansas

While T. R. lists West Virginia as a place of birth, it did not become a state until 20 Jun 1863.  If T. R. was born abt. 1844, he would have been born in Virginia, likely in the area that became West Virginia.  Although Lydia has West Virginia on this record as her place of birth, other records indicate Kentucky

Lazette Post Office was established 5 Mar 1872 when it moved from Jeffersonville.  It closed 30 Jan 1880 when it was moved to Cambridge.  Today, Cambridge is the only town of any size in Windsor Township.  Lazette, which was first named Gazette, was located north of Cambridge, but is now described as a ghost town.

(*Please note this is not the same person as J. T. Prewitt, age 33 and born in Kentucky, shown in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census living in Vernon Township, Cowley County, Kansas, on Page 621C, Line 33, with wife Jennie F., age 27 and born in Indiana, and children, William H., age 4 years, and Charlie, age 1/12, both born in Kansas.  This is Joseph Tilford Prewitt and his wife, Julia Frances (Van Hook) Prewitt.  They, also, had a son named William H. Prewitt, born 25 Sep 1875 in Kansas.)

Thomas's wife is Lydia Ellen Huff, daughter of Harrison James and Elizabeth Marie (Phipps) Huff.  Harrison James Huff was born 08 Aug 1818 in Montgomery County, Virginia.  He married Elizabeth Marie Phipps on Christmas Day 1839 in Jeffersonville, Tazewell County, Virginia.  She was born 5 Feb 1822 in Tazewell County, Virginia.  They had at least seven children together, and he seems to have died in 1855, probably in either Kentucky or Smyth County, Virginia.  Elizabeth died 11 May 1907 in Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, and is buried in Union Cemetery in Winfield.

Prior to the 1875 Kansas Territory Census, it has been a challenge to find Thomas R. Pruitt.  There is a strong probability that he is the individual enumerated in the 1870 U.S. Federal Census in Timber Creek Township, Cowley County, Kansas, living in the area served by the Winfield Post Office.  He is shown on Page 18 (image 2 of 2 at Ancestry.com), Line 33, Dwelling Number 7, Family Number 8.  This Census was taken as if it were 1 Jun 1870.

-Prwitt [sic], age 22, male, white, Farmer, born in Virginia
Picture
The 1870 U.S. Federal Census for Timber Creek Township, Cowley County, Kansas. T. R. Pruitt, enumerated as Prwitt, is shown on Line 33. Image from Ancestry.com.
The household enumerated immediately prior to him is J[ohn] W. Smiley, age 27, and his wife, Lucy, age 26.  Lucy is a sister of Lydia Ellen, who became the wife of Thomas R. Pruitt sometime between 1870 and 1873.

From Wikipedia:

“Cowley County was officially organized as a county, but reserved for the Osage Indians, by the Kansas Legislature in March 1867, originally named Hunter County for Robert Mercer Taliaferro Hunter (1809–1887), a Virginia Representative and Senator to Congress and Speaker of the House in the twenty-sixth Congress.  In 1870, the county was renamed for Matthew Cowley, First Lieutenant in Company I, 9th Kansas Cavalry, who died at Little Rock, Arkansas, on October 7, 1864.  Officially opened for settlement July 15, 1870, there was a lengthy and bitter disagreement between the towns of Winfield and Cresswell (the town now named Arkansas City) over the possession of the county seat of government.  Finally settled after two special elections and numerous petitions to the Governor and Legislature, Winfield was determined to be the county seat and a courthouse was constructed in 1873 at a cost of $11,500.”

Lydia Ellen Huff (1844-1919) Age 75

1850

Lydia is shown at age 5 in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census living with her family in Lawrence County, Kentucky.  Her older sister Lucy was born there, as well as her younger sister Frances, so it is likely that Lydia was born in Lawrence County, as well.  Lydia’s family is shown on Page 64A (image 29 of 150 at Ancestry.com), beginning on Line 31 in Dwelling Number 179 as Family Number 179.  This Census was taken as if it were 1 Jun 1850.

-H. J. Huff, age 32, male, Farmer, value of Real Estate owned is $550, born in Virginia
-Elizabeth Huff, age 25, female, born in Virginia, cannot read nor write
-William S. Huff, age 9, male, attended school within the year
-Lucy G. Huff, age 7, female, attended school within the year
-Lydia E. Huff, age 5, female
-Sarah J. Huff, age 3, female
-Frances M. Huff, age 1, female
It is indicated that all the children of H. J. and Elizabeth were born in Kentucky.

1860

In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Lydia is enumerated with her mother and siblings in Smyth County, Virginia, living in the area served by the 7 Mile Creek Post Office.  Her father, Harrison James Huff, passed away in 1855.  Lydia and her family are shown on Page 885 (image 25 of 191 at Ancestry.com) beginning on Line 25 in Dwelling 148 as Family Number 148.  This census was taken as if it were 1 Jun 1860.

-Elizabeth Huff, age 36, female, born in Virginia, cannot read nor write
-William Huff, age 19, male, attended school within the year
-Lucy Huff, age 17, female
-Lydia Huff, age 15, female
-Sarah J. Huff, age 12, female
-Frances Huff, age 10, female, attended school within the year
-Jerome Huff, age 9, male, attended school within the year
-Thomas Huff, age 7, male, attended school within the year
It is indicated that all of Elizabeth’s children were born in Kentucky.

1870

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, she is enumerated with her mother and siblings in Cowley County, Kansas, living in the area served by the Eureka Post Office.  The township was originally written as Grouse Creek Township with the first word having a line through it and Timber written above, making it appear to be Timber Creek Township.  Ancestry.com has it as Silver Creek Township, which appears to be a transcription error.  Lydia and her family are shown on Page 17 (image 1 of 1 at Ancestry.com) beginning on Line 9 in Dwelling 3 as Family Number 3.  Lydia’s brother William and his family are shown in the household immediately prior.  This census is taken as if it were 1 Jun 1870.
