Joseph Morand
Joseph Morand was born 3 Mar 1826 in Baden, Germany.  He was the son of Johann Baptist Morand and Maria Eva Kerzenmacher.

Joseph, along with his parents and siblings, were part of the original group of immigrants from Wyhl (Germany) who went to Venezuela in 1842 / 1843 to create the settlement Colonia Tovar.  More information on Colonia Tovar can be found below.  Joseph would have been 16 on this voyage, his sister, Petronella, would have been 13.  His older brother, Fidel, would have been about 23, but unfortunately, died at some point during the journey, possibly from the outbreak of smallpox that occurred on the ship.  From all accounts, conditions on the ship were grim.  Joseph's father died within that first few months of arriving in Tovar and his mother in 1852.

Joseph is found on the Passenger List of the Old England, sailing from Le Havre, France, and arriving in the port of New Orleans 5 Apr 1852.  He lists his age as 31 and another record states his origin is Ireland, but research indicates there is a high probability that this is our Joseph Morand.

He married Regina "Rachael" Halter 9 May 1854 in Kenton County, Kentucky.  His age is recorded as 28 and hers is 29.

Regine or Regina "Raechel" Halter was born 15 Jun 1829 in Schirrhein, Bas-Rhin, Alsace, France, to parents François Joseph Halter and Rosine Dollinger.

Joseph and Rachael had six children, all of whom were born in Kentucky.

-Joanna Caroline "Jennie" Morand was born 19 Feb 1855.  She married John Hiltz 1 Dec 1872 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  He was born Jul 1851, the son of Frederick Hiltz.  They had no known children.  Joanna died 27 Feb 1907 and John died 18 Nov 1926.  Both are buried in Mother of God Cemetery in Fort Wright, Kenton
County, Kentucky.

-John F. Morand was born about 1857.
-Martin Morand was born 10 Aug 1859.  He married Mathilda B. "Tillie" Grawe 11 May 1884 in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  She was born 3 Nov 1861 in
Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio, the daughter of Wilhelm "William" and Florentine Mary (Grawe) Grawe.  They had six children together; the five that are known are listed starting in the following paragraph.  Martin died 14 Nov 1898 and Mathilda died 29 Jan 1936.  They are both buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.

- -Martin William Morand (1885-1940) married Helen J. Lehmkuhl (1896-1970), daughter of Henry Bernard Lehmkuhl and Anna Woestman.  They had eight children:  Martin H.P. Morand, John L. Morand, Sister Mary Martin (Anna M. Morand), Helen M. Morand, Catherine S. "Boots" Morand, Theresa J. Morand, Joseph F. Morand, and Sister Rose Martin (Martha Morand).  Martin and Helen are both buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.

- -Leo J. Morand (1887-1956) married Irene Wyenandt (1887-1918), daughter of Edward Wyenandt and Elizabeth Dryer.  Following the death of Irene, he married Mary Elizabeth Ethelinda Rudolph (1897-1946) in Covington 10 Apr 1920.  Leo, Sr., and Irene had three children:  Leo Joseph Morand, Jr., Vernon A. Morand Middendorf, and Leona M. Morand Schierberg.  Leo, Sr., and Mary Elizabeth had four children:  Emily Morand, William J. Morand, Edna Mae Morand, and Virginia Lee Morand Taylor.  Leo, Sr., Irene, and Mary Elizabeth are all buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.

- -Flora J. Morand born (1891-1968) married George L. Bunker (1888-1950).  They had four children:  Mary Viola Bunker Klingenberg, Martin G. Bunker, Anna Bunker Rice, and Celeste Georgeann Bunker.  Flora and George are both buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.

- -Francis Bernard "Frank" Morand (1894-1948) married Elizabeth M. Homan (1890-1993), daughter of Heinrich "Henry" Homan and Rosa M. Schreiner.  They had five children:  Rosemary M. Morand Pleiman, Robert F. Morand, James L. Morand, Elizabeth Jane "Betty" Morand Baumgartner, and Thomas Morand.  Frank and Elizabeth and others in their family are buried in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery, Hamilton County, Ohio.

- -Theresa Josephine Morand (1896-1899) is buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.
The 1860 Census shows Joseph at age 34 living with Rachel and their children in Morning View, Kenton County, Kentucky.  He works as a Farmer.  Rachael's brother, Michael Holder <Halter>, lives with them.
-Rose Margaret Morand was born 12 Apr 1861 in DeMossville, Pendleton County, Kentucky.  She married Joseph Kling, the son of Joseph and Mary Kling.  Joseph was born 3 Aug 1858 and died 1 Mar 1912, at the age of 53.  Rose survived him, passing away 11 Dec 1940.  They are both buried in Mother of God Cemetery in Fort Wright, Kenton County, Kentucky.  Their six children follow:

- -Walter Kling (1884-1955) married Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bedinghaus (1886-1948).  They had three children:  Arthur Joseph Kling, Fanklin Sylvester Kling, and Beatrice Bertha Kling.

- -Georgetta Kling (1886-1942) married Alexander James Becker (1885-1947), son of Peter Becker and Caroline Louisa "Lulu" Hasemeier.  They had one child, Paul William M. Becker.  Georgetta and Alexander divorced and Alexander married Frances Loeck.  Georgetta is buried in Saint Johns Cemetery in Fort Mitchell, Kenton County, Kentucky.  Alexander is buried in Mother of God Cemetery in Fort Wright, Kenton County, Kentucky.

- -Carl William Kling (1889-1939) married Helen Marie Buscher (1893-1997).

- -Margaretta M. Kling (1892-1978) married Albert C. "Bud" Wahle (1887-1976).  They had one child, Earl Walter Wahle.

- -Ida Alice Kling (1895-1973) married Joseph H. Peetz (1889-1962).  They had one child, Celeste Peetz.

- -Frances Kling (1897-1979) married James Hughes (1885-1975) and later Mr. Becker.
-Regina "Rachel" Morand is profiled on her own page.

-Terese Morand, the twin of Regina, was born and died 25 Jan 1863.

Regina "Raechel" died 25 Apr 1865 at the age of 34 and is buried in Saint Marys Cemetery in Morning View, Kenton County, Kentucky.

Following the death of Regina, Joseph married Mrs. Mary Reed 26 Oct 1865.  She was born in 1825 in Germany / France.

The 1870 Census shows Joseph at age 44 living with new wife, Mary, and kids in DeMossville, Pendleton County, Kentucky.  He still makes a living as a Farmer.

It appears that Joseph visited the old country as he is found on the Passenger List of the St Laurent, sailing from Le Havre, France, and arriving in the port of New York 10 Sep 1879.  He lists his origin as Allemaigine, Germany, and age as 52.

The 1880 Census shows Joseph at age 55 living with Mary and his son, Martin, at 1209 Banklick Street in Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky.  He has taken a job at the High School in Covington and is working as a janitor.  He held that job for a number of years and was remembered fondly upon his death.

Joseph died 22 Apr 1895 at the age of 70 of Asthenia (loss of strength) complicated by Hepatitis with Malaria.  He is buried in Saint Marys Cemetery in Morning View, Kenton County, Kentucky.

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin mary
a.k.a.  St Mary's Church

The Morand family belonged to St Mary's Church in Morning View, which was located on St Mary's Road, in the southernmost part of Kenton County, Kentucky.  Joseph, Regina, and other family members are buried in the cemetery there.

I feel extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit this wonderful church and cemetery in June 2002.  It gives me great sadness that the church has since been destroyed by a tornado in 2012.

Colonia Tovar, State of Aragua, Venezuela

History from Wikipedia:

Between 1806 and 1918 a state called the Grand Duchy of Baden occupied much of the eastern bank of the Rhine River in the southwest corner of the mountainous wine-producing area Kaiserstuhl. From this duchy came the majority of settlers in Colonia Tovar.

A colonizing company was formed, composed of colonel Agustin Codazzi and Ramón Díaz, and as guarantor Martín Tovar y Ponte (the Count of Tovar). Codazzi contacted residents of Kaiserstuhl and selected an area where the colony would be founded, choosing a site with geographic and climatic similarities to the German region. The land chosen belonged to the nephew of Count of Tovar, Manuel Felipe Tovar, who donated it for the creation of the colony.

On October 14, 1841, the territory was founded as Palmar del Tuy and construction of infrastructure was begun. Once completed, the colonizing company went to the town of Endingen in Kaiserstuhl to select the settlers. The contracts between the company and immigrants were signed at the inn Der Pfauen, located a few meters from the entrance to the city. The immigrants who sailed to Venezuela amounted to 391 people: 240 men and 151 women, most of them from Kaiserstuhl. They departed for Venezuela on December 18, 1842.

They traveled along the Rhine, embarked at the port of Le Havre (France) on 19 January 1843 and arrived at the La Guaira on 4 March aboard the French ship Clemence piloted by Captain Malverin. The ship was scheduled to land on the Puerto Maya coast, north of La Victoria, but given that there had been no previous journeys following the path mapped by Codazzi, the ship was forced to turn to Choroni to go up the alternate path. This path was also designed by Codazzi and opened by the engineer Inder Pellegrini, leaving La Victoria to the place assigned for the new population. However, they could not disembark immediately in Choroní because there had been an epidemic of smallpox declared on board and the passengers and crew had to be quarantined in Choroní from March 13 that same year.

On March 31, they headed to the city of Maracay and La Victoria where there were received by President of Venezuela, Carlos Soublette. Settlers arrived in Palmar del Tuy on April 8, 1843, 112 days after leaving Baden. That day is considered the foundation day of Colonia Tovar, which took the last name of the donor. Among the first settlers there were scientists, naturalists, writers and painters, such as Carl Ferdinand Appun, Hermann Karsten, Karl Moritz, Anton Goering, Ferdinand Bellermann (painter who was sponsored by Humboldt) and many others, most of whom are buried in the city cemetery.
