Agnes Evelyn "Aggie" Sundin was born 12 Apr 1912 in Victoria, Ontonagon County, Michigan, the eldest child of Ole and Hilda (Anderson) Sundin.

The earliest known photo of Agnes. Her mom, Hilda (Anderson) Sundin, is nursing her in the hammock while her father, Ole Sundin, sits in the rocking chair. Mary, the girl who worked for Hilda, is sitting on the steps to the house, and Ole's brother, Andrew, appears to be doing something with a plant. Photo taken in Victoria, Michigan, in 1912.

Picture
Possibly Easter 1917. Ole Sundin and Hilda (Anderson) Sundin with their kids, Wilfred Victor "Bounce", Earland George "Earl", and Agnes Evelyn (she is the one who labeled the people in the photo and marked herself "Agnes (me)"), with Mary, the girl who worked for Hilda. In the car are Hilda's sister, Alma Victoria (Anderson) Lindberg, probably with her daughter, Alma Lillian Lindberg.
At the time of the 1920 Census, the family was still in Victoria and Agnes was age 7, living with her parents, Ole and Hilda, and siblings Victor Wilfred "Bounce", born 26 Jun 1913, Earland George "Earl", born 8 Jan 1916, and Viola Marie "Marie", born 20 Mar 1918.  Ole gave his age as 34, stated that he and both his parents were born in Sweden, and indicated he is a Machinist in the Copper Mine.  He arrived in this country in 1903 and was naturalized in 1912.  Hilda gave her age as 27, she was born in Michigan, and that both parents were born in Sweden.

In 1920, the official Census date was January 1, meaning that information collected reflected what was true as of January 1, even though the Census taker did not enumerate their house until 11 Feb 1920.  The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is notorious for the amount of snow it receives, and that winter was particularly hard.  The area had 41" of snowfall in November, 53" in December, and 27" in January.  The 11" that fell in February probably felt like an early spring, although March followed with another 18".

Ole and his family made the move to West Virginia, settling in Glen Rogers, in the early 1920s.  Ole's brother, John, arrived from Sweden in 1923 in New York and soon came to the same area in West Virginia. Aggie's little brother, Donald Edward, was born around the same time, and then Robert Leo was born in 1926.

The 1930 Census, taken 14 Apr 1930 as if it were 1 Apr 1930, shows Agnes at age 18 living with her parents and siblings on Main Street in Glen Rogers, Slab Fork Magesterial District, Wyoming County, West Virginia.  Her beau, Johnnie Dugan, age 19, lives just down the street with his family, but they are enumerated on a different page of the Census.

Agnes and John were married 27 Jun 1931 in Wyoming County, West Virginia.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. C. W. Sexton, who was then pastor for the Flat Top Church, also known as the Camp Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Witnesses to their wedding were R.C. Hager, Audrey Hager, Margaret Harden, and Anna L. Harden.
I asked Grandma about her wedding one day.  She looked at me like I was nuts and told me it was just a wedding.  So I pestered her a little more, "Was it in a church?  Who was your maid of honor?  What did your dress look like?"

She replied, "I don't know.  We just went up to the top of a mountain and got married!"

End of conversation.

Now, looking at her Marriage License, she, indeed, went to the top of Jesse Mountain and got married.  Sometimes it's just as simple as that.

Sometime before 1945, when their son, Thomas Michael was born, the family moved just outside of Charleston, to Belle.  Aggie's parents and siblings also made the move to Belle.  Johnnie's and Aggie's four boys grew up there and they loved their house on Riverview Drive.

Aggie's Uncle John Sundin and "Auntie" Emma Regina (Rehn) Sundin remained in Glen Rogers.  Their daughter, Ellen, married Hayden Wolfe, who was Postmaster of Glen Rogers for 23 years.  After his death in 1992, Ellen took over as Postmistress.  The families remained close, even after Aggie and Johnnie relocated to Milford and eventually Georgetown, Ohio, to be closer to family there, including Aggie's sister Marie and her husband, Bill Sexton.

Agnes Evelyn (Sundin) Dugan on her 91st birthday. Looking good! Photo taken in Milford, Ohio.
Aggie remained in Georgetown after the loss of her Johnnie in 1987, moving to a small apartment, which was easier for her living by herself.  Eventually, she moved to Milford to be closer to family and after a long, wonderful life, Agnes Evelyn (Sundin) Dugan died 9 Jun 2008 in Clermont County, Ohio, at the age of 96 years.

She is buried in Confidence Cemetery in Georgetown, Ohio, next to her Johnnie.
Obituary from an unidentified newspaper:

Agnes was born in Victoria, Mich., the daughter of the late Ole and Hilda Anderson Sundin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Dugan.

She is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law, Eugene and Carole Dugan of Durham, N.C., Richard and Jean Dugan of Maineville, Patrick and Donna Dugan of Fairfield, and Thomas and Linda Dugan of Leesburg, Va.; 10 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Virginia Sundin of Mason.
